Frequently Asked Questions About Neuro-Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (NIDS)

1. My child has autism/Asperger's/PDD/ADD/ADHD/OCD/ LD/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Will the NIDS protocol help my child?

Based upon our experience it does appear that the vast majority of children with theses diagnoses do
Have NIDS as the underlying cause.

2. My 9- year old child has moderate to severe autism with no expressive language skills and minimal receptive language skills. Is he too old to be helped?

No child is too old, some children are easier while some are much more difficult cases. We work with any child anywhere on the spectrum. "Severity" is so far not turning into a major marker of success or failure or even necessarily "harder or easier".

3. I have been to NIDS.net and neuroimmunedr.com and really think that you have the answers that we are looking for! We are in the process of getting our child in for the lab work but it all takes so long. We want to start something now! Is there anything that we can do?

On both of the websites you should find an article on the "Do's and Don'ts of Diet". You can start that now.

4. I live in Connecticut. Are there any NIDS clinics near me?

Go to the NIDS.net website to learn about the NIDS organization and the NIDS Parents Coalition Chapter near you. Our organization is rapidly growing and changing. Your local Chapter will be able to tell you what services are available in your area.

5. Can NIDS effect more than one member of the family?

In our experience this certainly seems to be the case. It is not unusual to find either parent with chronic fatigue syndrome, ADD, or another manifestation of NIDS. It is also not unusual to find these manifestations in siblings and in the extended family.

6. There are so many tests in the NIDS work up and they are so expensive! Why are there so many and can any be eliminated?

We agree that there are a lot and in some cases some can be eliminated but this is a clinical decision. The tests that directly reflect immune system activity are critical in making the diagnosis, determining treatment, and monitoring progress.

7. We have tried eliminating dairy and wheat and it is so hard! How strict should we be?

Milk protein and wheat represent close to 97-98% of food sensitivities. Removing whole wheat, and whole grains reduces gluten substantially. There are some kids that do best on a full gluten free/casein free diet but many will do well by just following the "Do's and Don'ts of Diet" found on the neuroimmunedr.com and the NIDS.net web sites. Diet alone is not going to fix your child, it is part of a total plan. Some children have problems with gluten free substitutes which may contain allergenic products. Do the best that you can with the diet but do not torture your child or yourself!

8. My child is due for a measles booster. I am very concerned about her getting one. Any comments?

We have to weigh protecting our children from many dangerous and deadly diseases against triggering a dysfunctional immune system. We need to exercise appropriate caution and care when giving vaccines and urgently need to reevaluate our vaccination schedules in regards to high-risk children (those either already diagnosed with NIDS or suspected and their siblings). This is not easy. You can get a measles titer and if it is positive eliminate the need for the booster. If it is needed it should be given only when the child is otherwise healthy. If the child is on the NIDS protocol this issue should be discussed with the clinic personnel.

9. The NIDS protocol does make sense but I don't want to give my child antibiotics, antivirals, and antifungals. Can't I just give her the natural substitutes that I can get at the natural food store?

Unfortunately in our experience the "natural" remedies just have not demonstrated consistent success.

10. What is wrong with my child? He does exhibit some autistic signs but he does not really fit the diagnosis. No one seems to agree on what is wrong with him! He is delayed in some areas but does OK in others. My husband and I disagree constantly about him but the one thing everyone agrees is that he is inconsistent.

In our experience when a child is undiagnosed, not characterized of a given diagnosis, and not defined by a neurologist as being obviously damaged or injured the chance of a NIDS connection is becoming extremely high.

11. Will the NIDS protocol make my child normal?

Looking at the population of children already served we can say that if your child has NIDS the NIDS protocol will make your child improved and healthier. Many of our children have lost their "autistic" diagnosis as a result of the NIDS protocol and rehabilitation. Some of our children have greatly improved but because of several factors; age at start of treatment, lack of education, rehabilitation services they have not lost their "label". Unfortunately as with many diseases duration of the illness can be a significant factor in the success of the treatment.

12. What is the cause of autism? I've heard a lot about mercury, vaccines, brain damage, genetics, "leaky gut", milk, wheat, vaccine contamination, viruses, environmental toxins, and chemicals.

The children we see are brought to us by their families who have heard about our protocol. The laboratory results that we have obtained have shown repeatedly the presence of a dysfunctional immune system. The other things that you mentioned may indeed be factors if the immune system is not functioning correctly.

13. Who do I contact if I have more questions?

Please visit www.NIDS.net or www.neuroimmunedr.com or call 1-888-540-4999 for local chapter information.
